marriage – wow

i knew it was coming, had high hopes that it would be sometime this year even, but today?

first “real” same-sex marriage in the US – ever. and where could it have taken place? in Mass, where the legislation is underway? in Vermont where domestic partner civil unions have been working for a while? nope – right here in glorious SF!

and a more perfect couple could not have been the front runner (oops, inside gay novel joke there) in this historic step. an older lesbian couple that have been together for 51 (yes – thats right FIFTY-ONE) years! how could that be more correct and right? how can ANYONE say that two people that have been a part of a loving couple for that long don’t deserve MORE than “civil union” – MORE than “domestic partners” – they DESERVE the rights and the respect that any “straight couple” could have after knowing each other 24 hours. it is just the right and fair thing.

going to be very interesting to see what happens next. ’cause you know that something is going to happen.

funny how M and i were talking about this just a few nights ago at dinner, basically saying that if things get crazy and bad for same-sex marriage and if the constitutional amendment goes through as “marriage for man and woman ONLY” we would just have to pack up and move to Canada. not going to live in a country where discrimination is part of the constitution. ALL men are created equal – doesn’t anyone remember that? i guess the funny thing was that we recognized that the issue was coming, but we didn’t have to decide “today or tomorrow” – turned out it was the day after that!

it actually hasn’t gotten to that yet – this is just the start for now – but now we have to ask “what happens next?” the news on Good Morning America should be an interesting watch tomorrow morning!

i’ll be watching
